Ukraine's heavy drone bombers "Baba Yaga" have become a nightmare for Russian military equipment

Ukraine's heavy drone bombers , which the Russians call "Baba Yaga" are the unsung heroes of this war. While the web is filled with dynamic footage from FPV drones, the night bombers are inflicting heavy losses on the Russians, but remain largely unnoticed. The footage, filmed with a night-time thermal imaging camera, is difficult for non-specialists to parse, but the night bombers are making a truly enormous contribution to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, writes Forbes .

It is worth noting that "Baba Yaga" is not a drone model, nor is it the name of the manufacturer. It is a generic name that the Russians have given to all night drone bombers of the Ukrainian Defense Forces. Most often, these are the Vampire, R18, Nemesis and Kazhan drones. They usually have four to eight propellers and carry a bomb load of up to 18 kg. They can strike at a distance of up to 20 km, carrying fewer bombs during longer missions.

Typical armament includes TM-62 anti-tank mines adapted for aerial bombardment; some drones can carry two of these and drop them with high accuracy. They can also carry 82mm and 120mm mortar rounds.

In most situations, the bombers hover over a stationary target to drop their payload. But there are cases when "Baba Yaga" chases some Russian transport and drops a bomb on a moving target, which requires considerable operator skill.

Due to their size and relatively low speed, these drones are almost impossible to use during the day, which is why they became night bombers. To find targets, they are all equipped with thermal imagers.

One such drone costs about $20,000. The Defense Forces have at least 2,000 of these drones. So their total cost is half that of an F-16.

OSINT analyst Andrew Perpetua, who analyzes video from the front and keeps track of the number of destroyed vehicles, believes that the effect of night bombers is seriously underestimated. According to him, thermal imagery footage usually does not allow one to accurately determine the type of vehicle on which the bomb is dropped. And although the explosion after this leaves no doubt that the target has been destroyed, it is impossible to add another T-72 or BMP-2 to the list of Russian losses, because there is no clear understanding of what kind of vehicle just burst into flames. At least until someone films this destroyed vehicle in the light of day.

At the same time, Andrew Perpetua sees a steady trend towards an increase in the number of Russian losses inflicted by the night drone bombers of the Ukrainian Defense Forces.

The Russians have not yet created their own analogue of "Baba Yaga", but, as numerous videos show, the occupiers are willingly repairing and using for their own purposes Ukrainian drones, which they managed to shoot down, but not completely destroy.

"Ukraine has a clear lead in heavy bombers, although the full extent of the damage they cause will only be known after the war," Forbes concludes.
